Description: The Portage represents Thorogood’s most iconic boot: the roofer or the monkey boot, as the British call it. It’s “Union Made” in the USA from American raw materials only.
Features: The roofer style, which was originally designed for the roofing trade, has a full extra piece of leather stitched onto the boot for added protection against wear and tear. The lace-to-toe style is immediately recognisable and the boots are surprisingly easy to break in while speed hooks make it swift to get the boots on and off. The boots come with a removable dual density shock absorbing footbed.
Construction: Like all Thorogood boots from the 1892 collection, the Portage is built with the famous Goodyear welted construction. Not only does this make it very comfortable to wear, it also enables you to replace the soles once you’ve worn them down. The boots are made on Thorogood’s #60 last and have an engineered composite shank. The midsole is made of rubber and the boot is unlined.
Materials: The Portage is made from the famous Horween Chromexcel leather and has oil resistant cork outsoles with black neoprene cord heels.
Maintenance: The Chromexcel leather will develop beautiful patina with wear and it doesn’t need much maintenance. However, to keep the leather in good condition, regularly remove dirt with a soft brush – especially around the welt.
When needed, condition the leather with beeswax, lanolin or animal fats and avoid product containing petroleum or distillates. First, remove the laces and clean the boots with a damp cloth and a brush. Then, apply the conditioner with a cloth or your fingers; make sure to apply plenty around the welt. Let it soak into the leather overnight and remove any excess care product.
Made in: All Thorogood 1892 boots are handmade at the Weinbrenner Marshfield factory in Wisconsin, USA.
Sizing: Like most American workwear boots, Thorogoods run large in size. Generally, we recommend you pick up your regular Red Wing US-size. In other words, size down at least half a size compared to what you wear in sneakers.
