Show Review: Meadow

Shop Review: MeadowAt the corner of Östra Rönneholmsvägen and Jörgen Ankersgatan you’ll find the undisputedly coolest denim shop in Malmö. Meadow opened in October 2008 and is owned and run by the two denim enthusiasts Christopher and Peter. As every jeans store in Malmö started focusing mainly on chinos, they decided to take the matter into their own hands and opened a genuine denim store. Christopher had previously worked for other denim retailers, while Peter had studied design and is Meadows in-house tailor.

Since the shop opened four years ago, there have been several changes in the small denim mecca in the middle of Malmö. The concept was originally inspired by the 50s with focus on brands like De Palma, Dickies and the like. Since then, the concept took a turn at being almost exclusively workwear, denim, and heritage inspired. Especially on the original brands like Levi’s, Wrangler, and Lee, and younger brands that have something special to offer. And since I visited the shop last time in April 2011, they gotten a new wooden floor in the shop.

The selection of Levi’s Vintage Clothing; the best-selling brand in the shop.

Meadow is equipped with an old Husqvarna sewing machine, so customers can have their jeans hemmed before taking them home. Furthermore, they experiment with homemade production of various wallets, keychains and cardholders.

New brand in the shop this spring is Rooktown. Based in Malmö, the only materials used for the products are original vintage items or pieces from the Swedish army. The t-shirts for instance are deadstock from the 1960s, the quality is simple amazing, they truly don’t make it like they used to.

Later this spring Momotaro jeans will also hit the shelfs, and for the fall you’ll be able to find brands like Ebbets Fields Flannels, Gitman Bros, Viberg Boots, and Mister Freedom in Meadow.

This little pouch was originally used to holster compasses by Swedish soldiers, today you can use it for your iPhone, which will fit perfectly in there.

The wardrobe is still full of denim goodies and Red Wing boots. Meadow is filled with authentic props like the classic Levi’s sign, Buddy Lee dolls, the Blue Bell-bell, and much, much more. In addition, the interior is also largely characterized by authenticity and the inventory include the old wardrobe above, a jukebox and totally raw and “naked” walls.

The back room of the shop is decorated like a living room, and you’re more than welcome to enter. Have a seat in the chair, put on an old record on the jukebox, open a bottle of wine from “the cellar”, close the curtains, and just relax.

Beside the brands mentioned above, Meadow carries goods from Wrangler Blue Bell, Lee Originals, Lee 101, Edwin, Indigofera, Nudie, Denim Demon, Pace, Penfield, Norse Projects, Han Kjøbenhavn, Red Wing Shoes, Vans, Sanders and many more.

I ordered some denims from Meadow webshop all the way from Australia a couple of months ago. It was absolutely hassle-free! Pre-purchase questions were answered quickly and with great details; shipping was fast and follow-up customer service afterwards was top notch. Highly recommended!
